Residents Have Until September to Shape Pembrokeshire's Future Walking and Cycling Routes

People across Pembrokeshire have until 28 September 2026 to have their say on the future of the county's walking, wheeling and cycling network, as the council seeks feedback in the second phase of its Active Travel Network Map (ATNM) review.

Pembrokeshire County Council is updating its Active Travel Network Map, which identifies both existing and planned routes for active travel. Under the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013, local authorities in Wales are legally required to prepare and maintain these maps to support the planning, delivery and funding of walking, wheeling and cycling schemes.

A first 12-week statutory consultation concluded in April 2026. The council is now carrying out this second phase specifically to give the public a chance to confirm that the views submitted earlier have been properly taken into account before the map is finalised.

The review covers eleven Welsh Government-designated localities across the county: Fishguard and Goodwick, Haverfordwest, Johnston, Milford Haven, Narberth, Neyland, Pembroke, Pembroke Dock, Saundersfoot, St Dogmaels and Tenby. Residents in all of these communities are being asked to check whether potential new routes have been correctly identified, whether existing routes needing improvement have been properly flagged, and whether routes already meeting the required standard have been accurately assessed.

The council's current map was approved by Welsh Government in 2022. The updated version, once agreed, will set out the routes the authority plans to improve or develop over the next three to five years — with real consequences for how funding is allocated for paths, crossings and cycle infrastructure.

How to take part

Residents can view the proposed routes and submit their comments through an interactive online map at the Data Map Wales platform: https://datamap.gov.wales/survey/Pembrokeshire-AT-survey-two/. The consultation opened on 3 August and closes on 28 September 2026.

It is worth noting that the consultation deals only with routes within the Active Travel Network Map and does not cover Public Rights of Way or other general highway issues.
